Price of Reinforcement Steel

Reinforcement Steel , or Rebar is used with concrete in Reinforcement Concrete Structures. A brief cost analysis for different parameters/thumb rules is given below

Different Size of Steel Rebar

Steel Reinforcement comes in different sizes. The sizes are standardised and are based on design requirement and ease of production. For example, it is not possible to get a 21 mm dia bar or 24 mm dia bars. But only 20 mm , 22 mm and 25 mm is possible.

The different Bar sizes are not a constraint in construction industry; as the specification of bars is usually decided by the Structural Engineer.

For structural engineer, only the amount of steel or Area of steel per sq m of concreting area is required. Hence we normally find structural engineer using combination of structural steel bars.

Purchasing Reinforcement Steel

While purchasing reinforcement steel ; following points are considered .

  1. Yield Strength / Tensile Strength Required :- Tensile strength is the stress a material can withstand before breaking. Reinforcement Steel comes at 350 , 415 and 550 N/mm2 . In market it is usually expressed as 350D, 415D and 500D. Though high tensile strength of Steel is also available; but they are manufactured on orders; hence not readily available. The cost of Steel increases , higher the grade of steel one wants by a factor of 10%.

  2. Primary Producer/ Secondary Producers :- Reinforcement Steel can be manufactured either directly from the Iron Ore mines or from Reuse Scrap materials. Companies choose one of the way to produce Structural steel and named as “Primary Producer” or “Secondary Producer”. Though , Secondary Producer will say they procure “Billets” ( Raw Iron from Mines) to produce; but in actuality they use scrap materials to produce steel which is cheaper. The rate difference between the two types of producer can vary from 15% to 25%. There are few primary producer like Tata, Sail and JSW in the market; and plenty of unorganised secondary producer in the market.

  3. Size of Rebar :- Typical and more consumable size of bars like 12 mm, 16 mm and 10 mm cost less then specific size and less consumable bars like 22 mm and 40mm. While procuring it would be good if the structural designer is told to go for typical sizes then difficult one.

Cost breakup of Reinforcement Steel

Reinforcement Steel activity cost breakup comes out in the following heads.

  1. Material Cost :- The cost of procurement from the suppler. The rates hover around Rs 40 to Rs 50 per Kg. And would depend on factors listed above. But for thumb rule purpose or for cursory calculation, the rates can be taken as a benchmark.

  2. Transportation Cost :- Transportation cost is usually Rs 3-4 per Kg per 1000 km. So if you are procuring steel from larger distance, then expect cost to be a significant difference maker. Apart from cost, The quantity of steel procured should well be in 8 ton, 12 ton , 16 ton or 32 ton; Not for a good luck factor; but for the truck capacity. To procure 5 ton or 23 ton of steel would cost more as the truck will not come in full capacity.

  3. Labor Cost :- The standard rates in the market for Reinforcement steel work is Rs 3.5 to Rs 5 per Kg. Or considering minimum wages in India at Rs 300 per day; The typical productivity is assumed at 100 kg of work per day. The labor rates are negotiated based on quantity of Steel that can be “Bar Bend” in a day. For Heavy steel > 16 mm dia ; Labor productivity of Steel is greater as it has > per m length; But for smaller section , rates are on. higher side > Rs 5. Also labor cost do depend on economies of scale; the more the quantity the less the rate quoted.

  4. Bar Binding Wire :- Though in Industrial Practise, Bar Binding wire is taken into Labor/Sub contractor rates ; but still its a cost. There is no calculation for the part of Bar Binding Wire, hence a lump-sum rates for Bar Binding wire is taken as Rs 600 per 1000 kg of Steel.

  5. Wastage :- Again Wastage depends on so many factors. Factors in control and out of control for contractor. A typical size of Reinforcement bars come at 12 to 14 m. And if the project requires 11 m of Bar Length, then the rest length is assumed to be waste. Sometimes, the waste length is used as rings, chairs or even in layout of columns; but still there is a waste that is not controlled. As per industrial standards; It is assumed 2% of wastage in Reinforcement Steel. Above it is assumed is due to inefficient Bar Bending Schedule
